How Hydro-Jetting Works to Clean Your Drains

Drain cleaning is a job you should go through whenever you encounter slow drains in your bathrooms or kitchen or if a complete clog develops that a standard plunger won't eliminate. However, you should also have drain cleaning scheduled as a regular maintenance service. When professional plumbers with the right equipment provide your drains with thorough cleaning once a year, you will encounter almost no clogs or slow drain issues at all. Your plumbing in general will have a longer life thanks to drain routine drain cleaning.

The hydro-jetter

One of the key tools that professional plumbers use for drain cleaning is the hydro-jetter. These devices are an ideal way to provide complete drain cleaning without resorting to chemicals that can damage pipes. (And this is as good a time as any to mention that you should never pour any store-bought chemical "drain cleaner" down your drains.)

The way that a hydro-jetter cleans out a drain is with blasts of high-pressure water. A hydro-jetter uses a motor to place a supply of water under high pressure, usually in excess of 7800 psi. This water is then blasted out a long hose that can snake down the length of a drainpipe. A nozzle at the end of the hose directs the spray in multiple directions so the scouring blasts can reach all points within the pipe.

The effect of this high-pressure water is to blast away layers of organic and mineral build-up along the interior of the pipe without causing any damage to the pipe itself. Hydro-jetting can knock through the toughest clogs as well, and you'll end with drains that are so clean that it will be difficult for debris to start again. Your drainpipes will stay clean for a long stretch.

Hydro-jetting is a task that must be left to skilled professionals. Not only does it take training to correctly do the job, but the high-pressure water is potentially hazardous. Professional use special gear to protect themselves.
